Su Marmuri
Grotta Su Marmuri is located in the commune of Ulassai, in the Barbagia subregion of Ogliastra, high in the mountains, the entrance to the cave itself is located at an altitude of 880 m above sea level. It is one of the largest caves in Europe, its length is 850 m and the highest vault is 20 m and is located in the Cactus Chamber, with a huge stalagmite in it. The cave is not only a cave carved by water but also a hibernation place for many species of bats, including Miniopterus, which fly from all over Sardinia here in winter. The name of the cave comes from marble, but the rocks probably have different hardness, which is visible from the colors and the admixture of iron. While visiting the caves, you can visit the Su Bullicciu restaurant, which is part of the complex and serves typical Ogliastra cuisine. The Ulassai area is beautiful, just take a ride along the main serpentine route. The mountains create unique landscapes, one worth seeing is the Cascata di Lequarci waterfall, which can be reached via the local Santa Barbara road from Ulassai. The waterfall disappears in summer and is only visible after heavy rains. It is 70 m wide and 50 m high. Therefore, it is best to visit the caves and waterfall on rainy days, because you can see Sardinia in a completely different light.
